Hijjawi’s SKB Team Ranks 2nd in IEEEDuino International Challenge

The SKB team from the Hijjawi Faculty for Engineering Technology at Yarmouk University won second place in the global IEEEDuino competition for Region 8, which includes Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The competition, focused on Arduino equipment programming, lasted over four months with more than 60 teams participating in the preliminary rounds. Fifteen teams advanced to the finals, where the SKB team secured second place, making it the only winning team from Jordanian universities.

The SKB project team included computer engineering students Mohammad Karasneh, Raneem Al-Badr, and Yazid Al-Subh.

Their project aims to "protect the marine environment using technology." The team developed an innovative capsule designed to operate in aquatic environments, capable of periodically collecting data from air and water using multiple sensors over extended periods. The collected data is stored in a central database, allowing researchers and stakeholders to access it via a dynamic user interface.

This technology aims to enrich marine environmental knowledge and provide data that can be used to develop AI models and other tools for environmental preservation and improvement.

Dean of the faculty, Dr. Mohammad Alzubaidi, emphasized that Yarmouk University, in line with its strategic plan, is committed to nurturing talented students by providing an environment that fosters creativity, enabling them to demonstrate their competence on international platforms—thus reinforcing the university's academic reputation.

He added that the team showed outstanding programming and innovation skills, reflecting the faculty's and university’s vision of supporting student excellence and creativity.

Dr. Zaid Al-Bataineh, Vice Dean of the faculty and advisor to the IEEE branch, said the team’s achievement proves the high caliber of Yarmouk’s students and is the result of efforts to foster a supportive environment for pioneering projects.

Ali Jawahreh, Chair of the IEEE Student Branch at Yarmouk, noted that this accomplishment enhances the branch’s reputation as a leading IEEE student chapter in Region 8.

It is worth mentioning that the SKB team received financial support from the Hisham Adeeb Hijjawi Scientific Foundation to develop their project, which helped them present innovative solutions and showcase their talents on this international stage.
